An introduction from the Senior Adjudicator

Welcome to the Independent Complaints Adjudication Service for Ofsted

The role of the Independent Complaints Adjudication Service for Ofsted is to deal with complaints made by any member of the public who has been affected by the actions or decisions of Ofsted, provided that the complainant must first exhaust Ofsted’s internal complaints procedure.

The Independent Complaints Adjudication Service for Ofsted may investigate any alleged failure by Ofsted to follow proper procedures, discourtesy, discrimination or injustice, delay and the failure to accept and apologise for mistakes made.

The Independent Complaints Adjudication Service for Ofsted is independent of Ofsted and whilst the Independent Complaints Adjudication Service for Ofsted cannot overturn a decision by the Chief Inspector, it may offer an independent view on complaints and provide recommendations, advice and guidance to Ofsted to help it to achieve best practice in complaints handling procedures. Ofsted does not have to comply with the recommendations but if it does not comply must publish its reasons for not doing so.

The Independent Complaints Adjudication Service for Ofsted is accountable to the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families and is obliged to produce an annual report on its work.
