Dr. Karl Mackie (Senior Adjudicator)
Karl has been CEDR's Chief Executive since the organisation was founded in 1990. He is internationally acknowledged as one of the leading practitioners and experts in mediation and has been engaged in mediation practice since 1980. He has mediated and facilitated cases across a rich variety of sectors of dispute with experience of parties from over 20 different countries, including successfully mediated cases regarded by the parties as 'impossible' to settle, and was approached to facilitate settlement of two of the most complex cases to go through the English legal system (both cases settled after 18 months facilitation work). He mediated the first substantial Court of Appeal commercial case to go to mediation and co-mediated the first UK health service group action to go to mediation, the Alder Hey retained organs litigation. A barrister and psychologist by training, Karl has been a leading academic and a partner in a business strategy consultancy before helping found CEDR. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, is on the panel of mediators / arbitrators of the UK's statutory industrial relations services, is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, holds a PhD and MBA and is on the Singapore International Commercial Mediators' Panel. Karl has been awarded an Honorary Professorship from the University of Birmingham and is Visiting Professor of ADR at the University of Westminster. He is Deputy Chairman of the Civil Mediation Council. He has written several books on mediation and legal skills, including the recent International Mediation: The Art of Business Diplomacy (with Eileen Carroll). Karl has been described in The Lawyer magazine as one of the top 100 most influential lawyers in the UK. |
Eileen Carroll
Eileen is CEDR's Deputy Chief Executive. In 1989, returning from working in the US, she spearheaded the pioneering work to establish CEDR. She is respected for her confidence and strength and has impressed parties with her "judicial use of toughness" to help parties bridge that last gap while maintaining their trust. She is co-author of International Mediation - The Art of Business Diplomacy published by Kluwer and has written and lectured extensively on international negotiation and settlement techniques and regularly lectures in the US and Europe. She recently featured in Elizabeth Cruickshank's book entitled Women in the Law which is a collection of interviews of twenty-eight women solicitors, barristers and judges, each recognised as outstanding in her profession. Eileen is a school governor at High School. |
Graham Massie
Graham is CEDR's Director of Consultancy and an experienced mediator, was also involved in the first case under the Academies SEN Stage 2 process, working alongside Heather Allen. A Chartered Accountant by background, he has been working with CEDR since 1996 and is currently Director of Consultancy responsible for our international development and conflict management consultancy initiatives. Previously responsible for CEDR's public sector schemes, Graham was the original designer of our mediation service under the Academy SEN Dispute Resolutions scheme and has been the Department's primary contact for the past four years. |
Gregory Hunt
Gregory is Director of CEDR Solve & Client Relations. He joined CEDR in June 2008 from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), where he worked across the field of arbitration and ADR for more than 12 years. Originally an Honours graduate of The University of Humberside in 1992, Gregory became a Chartered Marketer in 1999 and a CIArb accredited mediator in 2001, being re-accredited by CEDR in March 2009. He is a Member of the CIArb and the Chartered Institute of Marketing, an Associate Member of the British & Irish Ombudsman Association and of the Society of Construction Law. As well as having more than 25 mediations to his name, Gregory has been appointed to resolve workplace disputes involving racism (twice) and independent investigations following alleged negligence and breach of company policy. Gregory has been Parent Governor of an Infant School for over three years. He sits on the staff disciplinary tribunal / appeals board, and is vice-chair of the curriculum committee. |
Fiona Colquhoun
Fiona is a certified Henley Management College coach and works with individuals and groups on collaborative working frameworks and interpersonal skills. Fiona's professional background is as a board-level Human Resource Director in the IT and Telecommunications industries and previously in the NHS. She was the first Personnel Director of Mercury Communications Limited during its dramatic period of growth from 1984 to 1991 and for her contribution to this she won the European Woman of Achievement award. Fiona's early career was in the NHS, where she was the Personnel Director at the Hospitals for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, and Tower Hamlets Health District. She was a Non-Executive Director of St George's Healthcare Trust from 1993-1998. Fiona is a school governor at a well known School in London. |
Joanna Cavell
In the early 80's Joanna worked in the Paris office of an international re-insurance company. Working closely with the UK Head Office, she was involved in the consolidation of the organisation's various newly acquired European offices, gaining an invaluable insight to the inner workings of an international Plc. On moving back to London, Joanna joined a City PR firm, gained the Stock Exchange Registered Representative status and advised PLCs on their investor relations strategy. She also advised professional services organisations in the planning and implementation of their annual communications programmes. Joanna has been a consultant with CEDR since its launch in 1990 and became Accredited in 2005. Joanna has been a School governor of an over-subscribed Primary School for the past three years acting as Presenting Governor on several admission appeal hearings. She sits on the Governing Body's Disciplinary Appeal Committee. |
Andy Grossman
Andy has particular expertise in the property and construction fields and is the only architect on the CEDR Solve panel, with a focus on multi-party/multi-person disputes and cases where personalities have become a major obstacle to resolution. He has solid experience of mediations and facilitations in political and public sector environments at senior level. Andy places emphasis on building rapport and focusing on the lead negotiators in the mediation. With a calm, relaxed manner which often belies tenacity, Andy has an aptitude for dealing with highly volatile cases, with the ability to adapt quickly. |
Danny McFadden
An experienced commercial and property lawyer from Australia, Danny has been a CEDR Solve mediator since 2005. He has particular experience in the commercial sector and is highly versed in cases involving cross-border issues. Having successfully formed and managed his own businesses, Danny fully appreciates the realities and underpinnings of the professional environments. He receives consistently excellent feedback and has an easy, relaxed manner. |
Lisa Drake
A CEDR Director and CEDR Accredited Mediator Lisa is responsible for CEDR's Marketing, Development and internal operations. In addition for developing and overseeing CEDR's communications strategy Lisa co-ordinates strategic and operational activity across the organisation to ensure business effectiveness. Lisa has been with CEDR since 1999 and has over 10 years of experience of ADR. Since accrediting as a mediator in 2001 she has mediated a wide range of disputes including commercial contract, partnership, insurance and employment. She has particular experience of assisting organisations to resolve disputes and / or differences arising out of organisational change and /or a breakdown of relationships. She is experienced in both face to face and telephone mediation, including a secondment to provide an intenstive telephone mediation service. Lisa graduated from The University of Liverpool with a BA (Hons) in Sociology, specialising in Socio Legal Studies, and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. |
